While driving and observing traffic signs, We see the outline or shapes of traffic signs and they are universal and generally 3 basic geometrical shapes ( Circle, Triangle, Rectangle) are used. The learner driver and experienced driver should understand the meaning of those shapes. Shapes are very important while driving. If the driver is driving away from his native country where language is completely different and the driver can't read the language, understanding of shapes will help the drivers as each shape has a meaning.
For example,
In the picture, you saw a circle with Red outline and white background. Now the question is, what does circle mean? Forget about the things inside what is mentioned inside the circle. The sign is Obligatory signs, or that is you MUST NOT do that.
To make it more clear, lets talk about what could be inside that circle, It could be speed limit, no entry, no parking, no overtaking. If you do that its illegal or violation of law and could be dangerous or you will lose money or accumulate black points. Lets discuss about circle but with different color,
Circle outline is white and background is blue. What does it mean? Its a law but its mandatory, you MUST do that like, minimum speed limit, follow direction.
Now lets talk about triangle.
Triangle is also used in two different ways.
1) Upright
2) Inverted
Alongside picture is upright which means its a WARNING or HAZARD SIGN. You will see the sign from far behind and should slow down and it warns you that there is a hazard ahead. Inside the triangle there could anything like right or left band, intersections, traffic lights, animal crossings, pedestrians crossings, humps, roundabout, max. allowable height, slippery surface, stone falling areas and many other hazards. Triangle inverted means its a GIVE WAY SIGN. Priority is for other vehicles, you can join the traffic unless clear.
The next shape you can see is RECTANGLE. You may see it in different colour. Blue, Brown, Green. Anything in rectangle is information for the drivers.
Finally the unique sign is STOP sign. Experienced drivers Can you draw the shape of STOP sign? Most of the drivers think its circle however its not circle.
You realized its octagonal (eight sided).

Its not always possible to put road signs. So instead of road signs they put road marking. Visit Road marking posts.
